Hello friends it’s Tim here again from Super Mayhem, awooo, and boy howdy do we have, well not that many game hacks for you today.
In this addition to our game genie hijinx series we are going to look at the 1993 classic Star Fox, or “Starwing” as you may know it in the PAL regions. This game was super popular and sold over a whopping 4 million copies, not bad! By the way, the reason for the PAL name change was due to a German company being called StarVox which was considered too similar since in German the letter V is usually pronounced as an F. So there is a bit of trivia to start us off!
Unfortunately due to the Super-FX chip installed on this cartridge this game was not physically compatible with the game genie meaning there are not many codes known for the game. However, since it is such a popular game I still wanted to cover the few cheats that do exist since we can now play this game via emulator and some cool people have found some cool game genie codes for us to mess with. So if you like Star Fox, the SNES or just game hacking in general, then why not smash that like button to see if we can get to at least 30 likes, subscribe if you are new and don’t forget to ring that bell! With all that said prepare your pants as we explore a few of the codes that do exist for the much loved and well purchased game, Star Fox, lets go!
We will start off with one of the more entertaining cheat codes and that is D1A0-DF0E with this bad boy in place you can actually start the game playing the final Goal which is known as Venom! From the map selection screen it looks like you will simply start on the first stage, however once you press start it loads up the Venom level instead! This code really seems to be version dependant as I had to try a couple of different versions to get it working as it should, many just started me off in the regular way! So if you try this one you will most likely need Star Fox Version 1.0! Anyway it is a fun place to start that’s for sure, except if you are a noob like me! I will also note that the Dog that gives you orders is named General Pepper, there is a rumour that his name comes from the Beatles album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” because of his uniform looking a little like the character from the album cover and of course his name being Pepper!
Not quite a game genie code but there is also a neat Easter Egg in the Asteroid field in level 3! This world is called “Out of this Dimension” and can be accessed by shooting and destroying the second of the largest asteroids. If you do this right a weird kind of bird flys out of it and you have to fly into this weird space bird! This will take you back to the map screen where you can now access this Easter Egg level where the background is all warped, enemies look weird and during the main part of the level there is a weird distorted rendition of Johann Strauss II’s “Voices of Spring” waltz. To top off this madness the boss is a kind of giant slot machine! The only way to pass him is to get 3 7’s by shooting the arm of the machine to spin it and then the credits will roll. The only way to get out of this level is to reset your machine, pretty whacky! Whilst you are fighting the slot machine the music mixes several classic songs such as the Japanese folk song “Yuki”, “When the saints go marching in” and even a German folk song known as “Hänschen Klein”. What a weird mix of a level this one is!
The next code we will take a look at is 5560-DDF3 which is a bit of a strange one! When you start the game off you start in the Launching tube right, well with this code in place you actually never leave the Launching tube! It just keeps on going and going, showing different angles and glitching a bit. It’s a bit of a useless code but hey, we are dealing with a game that didn’t technically support the game genie so we will take what we can get!
At first glance I didn’t actually think this next code worked, but hey it turns out it does and boy is it sweet! Enter in 2D29-65EA as your game genie cheat code and you will find out that you have an unlimited shield and in essence invulnerability! So it turns out is quite hard to actually get hit on the first stage but if you do run into enemies or obstacles your shield will decrease like normal, however when your shield hits empty you can still take damage and continue on like usual. This means you can pretty much get passed any level without too much hassle at all! This is definitely the best cheat you can find for good old Star Fox, and really, what more could you want in a cheat!
If you prefer a little bit of a more complicated code then you can also enter the 2 line beast that is 21C0-A7CE + 21C0-AFCE and this actually has the exact same effect as the previous code we looked at! Unlimited shields and you can’t die or get a game over! These are pretty sweet and you should really give them a go as it is lots of fun to just smash your way through each level!
For some reason there are a few more codes that revolve around the Launching pad tube thing at the start of each level. For example if you enter in 5561-DDF3 we get this kind of upside down view of the pilots taking off. It’s kind of interesting as you can see the floor being drawn as you move up to it but it doesn’t help game play that much! Not much else to say about this one other than it exists if you are interested in glitches!
And the last code we will take a look at is XX60-DDFB you may be asking yourself why the 2 X’s at the start? Well you can replace them with other characters to have different effects. I used AE in this demonstration. So what does the code actually do? Well it changes the way your ship explodes when you crash! With my version of the code my ship just disappears but I believe you can get all kinds of different effects depending on your character choices! Not the coolest cheat to end on but it seemed fitting as dying is a good outro to the video.
Anyway that’s it for today my friends! I really hope you enjoyed taking a look at the few existing codes for Star Fox on the SNES!
